Beth Wald: On the Level

At dusk the snake charmers and other entertainers leave the main square in Marrakech, Morocco, and the pushcart vendors take over to sell a variety of food to tourists and locals. Adventure photographer Beth Wald found it a very confusing scene. "I took a few shots from ground level," she says, "but I really wasn't getting a sense of the place. So I went up on the balcony of a restaurant overlooking the square and shot down on the scene. Because of the angle it makes it look like there are several levels, like the vendors are on platforms."

Beth used a tripod-mounted F100 and a 35-70mm f/2.8D AF Zoom-Nikkor. "I took several fairly long exposures. This one was probably at one second.

"It's one of the most basic ideas and one of the best lessons: always look around for another, better perspective."
