Nancy Brown: Easy Does It

Sometimes the best way is the easy way. It was for commercial photographer Nancy Brown when it came to making this photo. "We tried it first indoors at my home with a lot of studio lighting and reflectors, but we were having terrible problems with the reflections we were getting from the glass. What a pain! So we moved it all outside.

"We set up a card table in the yard. We had nice, flat lighting, and we just moved the table around until everything looked good."

Nancy used an N90 and an 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor for the photo.

"The picture was my own idea, and I took it for stock, so I didn't have a client standing around telling me what I had to get. I was free to play around and make it work.

"Maggie is my neighbor's daughter, and I've photographed her since she was a little baby. She's a great subject. You don't always need professional models when you take pictures of children. Most children are wonderful. Maggie has a great look. She's very quiet, very cooperative, and she was very happy to get the fish when we were finished."
